Zoom Zoom Zoom!
As most of you probably know, Dave and I got a new car this week... and in 5 years it will be all ours!!!!!!Our very first brand new car, and we are both very excited! It's a Mazda 3 SP23, and it's as-red-as-red-can-be with a rather swish black leather interior. It's an ActiveMatic, which means it's an automatic with the option of manually changing the gears (but without a clutch).
This photo I took as we were leaving the car dealership...
Today we went for a bit of a Zoom Zoom up through the Dandenong's (as you do when you have a new car), and I took these pics when we stopped at one of the lookouts....

Clare Bowditch @ The Corner
On Tuesday night, Dave and I went to a charity BBQ/concert at the Corner Hotel in Richmond. The night was put on by Clare Bowditch and her band The Feeding Set. I'm a bit of a fan of Clare's, so it's probably fair to say that, yes, once again, I dragged Dave along to another girly concert.Doors opened at 6:30, so we high-tailed it home from work, got ready and headed out. We were there by about 7 and joined the queue to get in. Once in, we got our arms stamped (which is always fun), and headed up to the rooftop area where the BBQ was being held.
As we were getting our bearings and wandering over to get a drink so as to feel a little less out of place, we nearly bumped into a pregnant young lady, who just happened to be Clare Bowditch herself! "Hi" I said, and she said "Hello" and we continued on our respective ways. "Um, Dave, that was actually Clare...". "Really?" Well that was weird, we thought.
We got ourselves some drinks and stood around trying to blend in (we've never been to a gig at a pub before), while waiting for the BBQ to be ready. The weirdness of running into Clare became less weird after a while, as she wandered past us many more times as she made her way from table to table saying hello to different people she knew and between trips to the "Ladies" (as is the way with pregnant women, or so I'm told!). It was actually a really nice family feeling - it sort of felt like you had somehow managed to get an invite to a BBQ at her place.
The BBQ was provided by a spit-roast catering company, and when it was ready, Clare wandered about letting us all know that the 'grub' was up, so we all joined the queue. Well, we had our meal (or at least I had a meal), and started wondering to ourselves when the concert would begin, which really was our reason for being there. It was about 8pm when I noticed a run-sheet for the evening posted up. Clare wasn't going to start singing until 10pm!!!! And this was a weeknight, and I'm one of the "early to bed" kind of people! Oh dear!
Anyway, between then and 10, we were kept entertained by a film about the charity the event was in aid of - KOTO - and then a short set by another young female singer-songwriter named Jess McAvoy who was really good and helped the time go by. Jess was just introducing us to what would be her last song of the evening, when Clare called in from the side requesting that she make it her second last as she was suffering a little indigestion (these pregnant people, I don't know!).
After Jess finished her set, we had to wait another 30 minutes before Clare and The Feeding Set finally took the stage. Boy was I glad that I decided to go with comfortable shoes! It was worth the wait - the show was really good. And we all forgave her the delays when we found out that she is carrying twins. Clare's voice was really beautiful, but huskier than usual as she had apparently lost her voice completely earlier that day! But the show went on, and she made it through the set.
All in all, (aside from all the waiting around) it was a fantastic night!! Another one of those nights, when you can't help but think to yourself what a fantastic city we live in.

BROAD!
On Wednesday night, I dragged Dave along to the Atheneum Theatre on Collins Street to see Broad.Broad is a five-woman concert series put together by Deborah Conway. Basically, Deborah picks four up-and-coming artists from a broad range of genres and they all tour together singing some songs together and each taking turns to sing some of their own songs (with the others free to chip-in whenever they feel like it). She actually did the same type of show last year with a different group of artists.
The four artists she brought together this year were: Kate Miller-Heidke (a quirky folk-pop-operatic singer and pianist from Brisbane); Ella Hooper (rock chick from Killing Heidi); Melinda Schneider (country music singer) and Mia Dyson (R'n'B / country).
Really, I just wanted to go and see Kate Miller-Heidke who I "discovered" earlier this year on iTunes. She has an amazing voice and some really quirky song lyrics which I really love. You can have a listen to a couple of her songs at her My Space page. The show was great, and I don't think Dave suffered too much. The highlight for me was when Kate sang a song she wrote called "Australian Idol" which was absolutely hilarious and had the entire theatre laughing.
We also spotted a couple of Melbourne celebrities who were also there to see the show... Lindsay Field (back up singer for John Farnham) and Brian Nankervis (the really tall guy who hosts RockWiz on SBS).
A Day Out with Picasso
Last weekend we went along with some friends (Huw and Pippa) to see the Picasso exhibit at the National Gallery of Victoria. It was quite a fascinating exhibit which really gave you a sense of what Picasso the person was like, and of the times in which he worked. My favourite was a series of photos that showed the creation of a huge mural that was showed at one of the World Expos. They projected the images in sequence onto a large wall and it really gave you the feeling of watching the artist at work as the painting come together. As the images progress, various features of, and characters in, the painting emerge and came to the fore at different stages with some then moving into the background as other figures came to the fore. As you can tell from the following photo, the Gallery is trying to keep the exhibit "hush-hush"!
Obviously, I wasn't able to take any pics inside the gallery, but here's a photo I took in the foyer of a sculpture with the water falling over the plate glass as a backdrop - just because I thought it looked beautiful!
Then, just because I am once again besotted with the city of Melbourne and how beautiful it is, I took some more pics on the way back to the car. Here are a couple of them... just look at that beautiful Melbourne weather!
